Healthy Economies, Healthy People: Planning for Community Food Systems

When: May 30, 2024

For many decades of economic development and community planning, investments in food system elements and community access to healthy food were not included. As public health advocates raised many concerns about trends in poor community health indicators, economic development specialists made the connection between the wellness of a community being an indicator of wellness of the workforce. This brief presentation will highlight the elements that define a healthy food system and the approaches being used to intrinsically link investments in community wellness with economic vibrancy.

Webinar Attendees will:

1. Identify the primary functions and elements that define a food system
2. Understand systemic barriers in planning and investment that contributed to food access/food security/food production/food distribution marginalization
3. Understand new models of community and economic planning that intrinsically value and plan for vibrant, equitable, and resilient food systems
