Climate Health is Public Health!
Public health means access to information as well as to sources of influence and power. The NYSPHA Climate Committee promotes climate health and equity for all New Yorkers through:
- Education
- Communication
- Advocacy
- Action
Get to know the committee’s important work:
- Created a “Youth Climate Resource Guide,” updated for students, teachers, and parents. It’s an annotated compendium of climate camps, summits, groups to join, climate news and podcasts, movies and documentaries, climate fiction and nonfiction, climate music and art, eco-travel, and more.
- Conducted Youth Climate Focus Groups throughout the State to learn how youth and their families are impacted by climate change, how they feel - angry, worried, hopeful - how they’ve taken action, and what adults can do to help.
- Developing targeted communications campaign using a variety of media.
- Involved in advocacy efforts for statewide K-12 climate change education, transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable energy, holding major polluters accountable for damage they’ve done, and more.
- Actively collaborating with other Public Health organizations and organizations beyond the Public Health arena.
- Received the Excellence in Climate Leadership Award from the American Public Health Association (APHA) Center for Climate, Health, and Equity in 2023.
The committee meets every third Friday of every month from 12:00-1:00 via Zoom. No expertise in climate, advocacy, or communications is needed.
