Social Determinants of Health Across the Lifespan:  Strategies to Address the Impacts of Poverty

Followed by the conference opening Public Health Synergy Showcase!

This interactive, half-day Learning Institute will feature The Community Action Poverty Simulation (CAPS),* a product of the Missouri Community Action Network, Inc. Ashley Fico of SUNY Brockport will facilitate the CAPS, designed to help participants experience the challenges faced by lower-income families. Breakouts will follow focusing on the impacts of poverty on early childhood, mid-life and older adults, including case examples and successful interventions. The closing session will feature Julia Hastings and Elizabeth Smith-Boivin, who will explore the cumulative effects of poverty and chronic disease on cognitive health and introduce a more empowered perspective for public health intervention across the life course.

Speakers:

 Ashley Fico, PhD, MA, SUNY Brockport
Ashley is an Associate Professor, Department of Public Health & Health Education. She is an expert in the role of interpersonal communication, often exploring these skills in the context of health.

Patty Demma, CCAP, Mohawk Valley Community Action Agency, Inc.
Patty is a Nationally Certified NEAR (Neuroscience, Epigenetics, ACEs and Resilience) Science Trainer. She runs trainings on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Trauma-Informed care practices, and will lead the breakout on early childhood.

Jennifer Audette, LCSW, Stratton VA Medical Center
Jennifer is Chief of Social Work, providing supervision and clinical oversite for more than 100 social work staff. She previously worked for the US Army providing marriage and family therapy. Jennifer will co-lead the breakout on mid-life/Veterans.

Glenn Gilbert, LCSW, Stratton VA Medical Center
Glen is the Veterans Experience Officer and Service Chief for Patient Experience, including community-based programming for 500 homeless Veterans across the full adult life spectrum. He will co-lead the breakout on mid-life/Veterans.

Becky Preve, Association on Aging in New York
Becky is Executive Director, working in collaboration with NY’s local Area Agencies on Aging to promote independence, preserve dignity, and advocate on behalf of aging New Yorkers and their families. Becky will lead the breakout on older adults.

 Julia Hastings, PHD, MSW, SUNY Albany
Julia is an Associate Professor in the Schools of Public Health and Social Welfare. Her scholarship concentrates on addressing disparities in health and mental health outcomes for underserved populations.

Elizabeth Smith-Boivin, Alzheimer’s Association Northeastern NY Chapter
Beth’s appointment as Executive Director in 2012 is the continuation of a 35-year career in care of and service to the geriatric community and individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. She also serves as a Research Champion, speaking about dementia science and the Association’s global leadership role in research.
